Date: 15 July 1993, for drivers v1.10, Viper version
Notes relative to installing OS/2 2.1 Power 9000 video display drivers.
Assumptions:
These instructions assume that normal VGA video drivers are currently
installed. If this is not true, potential problems may result. Please
make sure that the VGA video drivers are installed for the primary video
adapter.
Quick-start:
The files \CONFIG.SYS and \OS2\OS2.INI should be copied to a backup directory
before installation is initiated, as they will be modified. Also, if you
have WinOS2 support enabled, you will also need to copy
\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM.INI to a backup directory or diskette, as it will
also be modified for WinOS2 seamless support.
To install the Power 9000 PM and WinOS2 seamless drivers, do the following:
1. Insert the diskette labeled Power 9000 OS/2 Installation into a diskette
drive (normally drive A:).
2. Select an OS/2 Window or OS/2 Full Screen session from the command
prompts folder.
3. Select the diskette drive by typing A: or B: followed by Enter.
4. Execute DSPINSTL.EXE by typing dspinstl followed by Enter.
5. Click on the OK button (or key Enter) on the Help not available
dialog box.
6. Select the Primary display check-box, then click OK. To abort
installation click on Cancel. The secondary adapter is not supported.
7. Select the desired resolution from the list-box, and click on OK.
Make sure that your Power 9000 adapter has sufficient memory for the
desired resolution, and that your monitor supports the resolution.
8. Change the source directory indicating the location of the installation
diskette (if necessary), then click on Install.
9. Files will now be copied to the appropriate directories, and the
configuration files will be modified accordingly.
10. When installation has been completed, select Cancel.
11. You will then see a dialog box indicating that changes have been made
to your system configuration. Click on OK.
12. Exit the OS/2 window or full screen command prompt by keying exit
followed by Enter.
13. Now shut-down the system and restart OS/2. Remember to remove the
installation diskette if it is in a bootable diskette drive.
14. You are now ready to experience the speed of the Power 9000 under OS/2!
NOTES:
This installation does not copy WinOS2 full screen Power 9000 windows
drivers. The existing WinOS2 VGA full screen windows drivers will be
utilized.
If you desire WinOS2 full screen Power 9000 drivers, please install the
normal Power 9000 windows drivers from the Power 9000 Windows Installation
diskette, available separately.
Support for the secondary video adapter is not currently available. If you
select the secondary adapter, no files will be copied, and no configuration
files will be modified.
PROBLEM DETERMINATION:
This release support OS/2 version 2.1 or better. It requires the 32 bit
graphics engine. Do not attempt to install these drivers on OS/2 version 2.0.
If your system hangs after installation, make sure that the statement
DEVICE=\OS2\POWER_9K\VIPER.SYS is placed before any network device driver
statements as well as the PMDD.SYS device driver in the CONFIG.SYS file.
An easy to way to ensure this is to place the statement as the first line
of the CONFIG.SYS file.
To return the system to its original state, you will have had to made a
backup copy of the \CONFIG.SYS and \OS2\OS2.INI files. If you have done so,
copy the original CONFIG.SYS from the backup directory or diskette to the
root directory (usually C:\). Then copy the OS2.INI file from the backup
directory or diskette to the \OS2 directory. IF you had WinOS2 enabled,
you will also need to copy SYSTEM.INI from your backup directory or diskette
to \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2. You can now shut-down and reboot the system to return
to the original state. If you like, you can now delete the following files
that were copied to the following directories:
\OS2\DLL\P90DEV32.DLL
\OS2\DLL\P90DSP32.DLL
\OS2\DLL\P90OEM32.DLL
\OS2\DLL\BVHP9000.DLL
\OS2\POWER_9K\VIPER.SYS
\OS2\POWER_9K\P9000.PMI
If WinOS2 was enabled:
\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM\P9INIT.DLL
\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM\SP9K_08.DRV
If DOS was enabled:
\OS2\POWER_9K\VVIPER.SYS
\OS2\POWER_9K\VVPRVGA.SYS
You can also remove the directory:
\OS2\POWER_9K
Enjoy,
LDT
